Biography:

Knowles returns for his third season in Portland after starting his career with Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake in 2005.

2008: Started 29 of 30 matches for the Timbers ... missed his first match with the club in two seasons due to a league-imposed, one-game suspension for yellow-card accumulation in September ... Recorded a team-high 2,610 minutes which also ranked among league leaders in minutes played ... was a three-time USL First Division Team of the Week selection, earning honors in Weeks 4,5 and 15 ... following the season was named to the USL First Division All-League second team.

2007: Played in all 28 regular-season matches for the Portland Timbers and totaled 2,520 minutes, two goals and an assist ... led the USL First Division in minutes played (2,520) ... named to the USL First Division All-League first team ... was selected to the league's Team of the Week in Week 6 and 20 ... was one of three finalists for the USL First Division Defender of the Year award ... part of the Timbers defense which set a new modern-franchise record for fewest goals allowed in a single season (18).

2006: Did not make an appearance with Real Salt Lake ... played 929 minutes in 12 matches for the Real Salt Lake Reserve squad.

2005: Totaled 346 minutes in four matches his rookie season with Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake ... made his professional debut on June 22 against the Los Angeles Galaxy ... started three of his four appearances ... logged 810 minutes in 10 matches with the Real Salt Lake Reserve team and scored a goal against the Columbus Crew Reserves on Sept. 25 ... was a fourth round pick (37th overall) by Real Salt Lake in the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft.

COLLEGE: Captained Akron his senior year ... part of Akron defense that allowed only three goals in league play and recorded 13 shutouts in 2004 ... a two-time All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) first-team selection ... led Akron to two MAC titles in 2002 and 2004 ... helped Akron make four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances ... was selected to the All-MAC second team his freshman and sophomore seasons ... voted Akron’s Newcomer of the Year in 2001 ... named College Soccer News All-Freshman Team honorable mention ... played in 49 straight games during his career at Akron ...

NATIONAL TEAM: A member of the New Zealand U-16 and U-17 National Team pools ... was a member of New Zelands' U-17 squad competing in the FIFA World Championships ... broke his leg three weeks prior to the opening of the U-17 World Cup and was unable to play ... started playing elite levels of soccer in New Zeland at the age of 15.
