BURNABY, B.C. - Joe Gjertsen scored a breakaway goal in the 17th minute to lead the Vancouver Whitecaps past the Portland Timbers in the opening game of the 2006 USL First Division season at Swangard Stadium. Gjertsen struck when 2005 league MVP Jason Jordan collected a loose ball near midfield. Jordan played a neat ball through to Gjertsen, who beat Timbers defender Scot Thompson and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Josh Saunders.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Chad Bartlomé scored a goal in his debut and Josh Saunders made several key saves to lead the Portland Timbers to a 1-1 draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps at PGE Park. Bartlomé, who had officially joined the team earlier in the afternoon, put the Timbers ahead in the 21st minute when midfielder Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar brought the ball into the center of the field and launched a blistering shot from the edge of the area. The ball took a deflection off of a Whitecaps defender and keeper Josh Wicks was only able to parry the ball, which fell to the path of on-rushing Bartlomé, who buried the shot in the back of the net.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Alejandro Gutierrez scored a first-half goal and Troy Ready sealed the victory with a strike in the 69th minute for the Portland Timbers in a 2-1 win against the Minnesota Thunder. Gutierrez put the Timbers in front in the 31st minute after striker Chad Bartlomé was taken down by Brett Branan in the penalty box. Referee Ben Chouaf wasted no time in pointing to the penalty spot, and Gutierrez sent Thunder goalkeeper Joe Warren in the wrong direction before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

MIAMI - Former World Cup MVP Romario scored twice, including a dramatic 89th-minute game winner, as Miami FC defeated the Portland Timbers 3-2 at Tropical Park Stadium. Romario got his second goal and the match winner when he headed in a floating cross at the back post to seal the win. The victory was the first in franchise history for Miami, who joined the league as an expansion team in 2006.

BAYAMON, P.R. - Joshua Norkum scored in the second and 22nd minutes and Alejandro Gonzalez added a goal in the 14th minute as the Puerto Rico Islanders beat the Portland Timbers 3-1 at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium. Byron Alvarez got a goal back for the Timbers in the 67th minute when he got on the end of a ball from Edwin Miranda. Alvarez beat the Puerto Rico defense and then sent Islanders goalkeeper Dan Kennedy the wrong way before launching the ball into the top corner.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Matthew Delicate scored the game-winning goal and former Timber Aaran Lines got the assist as the Rochester Raging Rhinos defeated the Portland Timbers 1-0. The Raging Rhinos broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute when a cross from Lines found Delicate in the Timbers penalty area. Delicate collected the ball and sent it past diving Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders and into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Luke Kreamalmeyer opened the scoring and Oral Bullen added a goal and an assist as the Portland Timbers defeated the Toronto Lynx 2-1. Kreamalmeyer received a pass in the 52nd minute, shot in-stride, and the ball blazed past Lynx goalkeeper Richard Goddard and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Bullen doubled the scoreline for the Timbers with a score in the 60th minute.

The Timbers broke the deadlock when Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar grabbed a loose ball near midfield. He dribbled the ball up, then crossed it into the Minnesota penalty area. Alvarez got on the end of the ball and his header sailed past Thunder goalkeeper Joe Warren.

SEATTLE - Josh Saunders recorded his second consecutive shutout and the Portland Timbers tied the Seattle Sounders 0-0 at Qwest Field. Saunders made two crucial saves in the first half to preserve the shutout. Midfielder Oral Bullen almost scored a late winner for the Timbers after Mamba Chisoni brought the ball down the left flank. Chisoni’s cross into the box found Bullen at the far post, but Bullen’s diving header sailed up and over the bar.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar scored a goal and tallied an assist, and the Portland Timbers defeated the Seattle Sounders 3-1 at PGE Park. Alejandro Gutierrez and Mamba Chisoni also scored for the Timbers, who hadn’t lost in the last four matches, going 3-0-1 in that span. Seattle got on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute after Seyi Abolaji put a cross into the Timbers penalty area. The ball found Zach Scott, whose header sailed into the top corner of the net to knot the score at 1-1.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Luke Kreamalmeyer scored in the 60th minute and Scot Thompson added a second goal in the 69th minute as the Portland Timbers tied the Rochester Raging Rhinos 2-2 at PAETEC Park. Connally Edozien and Matthew Delicate scored for the Rhinos, including an 89th minute header by Delicate to earn the draw for the Rhinos.

MONTREAL - Bayard Elfvin recorded a shutout in his first start in goal of the season as the Portland Timbers played the Montreal Impact to a 0-0 draw at the Claude Robillard Sports Complex. Elfvin, who played for the Timbers in 2004 before joining USL First Division rival Virginia Beach for 2005, made 10 saves to get his third career shutout as a Timber.

Portland had a chance to even the score in the 56th minute when Tom Poltl stole the ball from Jeff Clarke. Poltl played the ball forward to the feet of forward Drew McAthy, but the ball was taken off McAthy’s feet by Whitecaps goalkeeper Tony Caig.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Fabian Sandoval converted a penalty kick in the 41st minute to lead Miami FC to a 1-0 win over the Portland Timbers at PGE Park. The two teams were playing square until Timbers defender Salim Bullen took down a Miami player on the edge of the area. Referee Colin Arblaster wasted no time pointing to the penalty spot, and Sandoval froze goalkeeper Josh Saunders in his tracks and coolly slotted the ball into the bottom-left corner for the 1-0 win.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar converted a penalty kick and scored again in a shootout to lead the Portland Timbers past English team Coventry City 4-3 on penalty kicks in front of 10,985 fans at PGE Park. After finishing 90 minutes knotted at 1-1, the Timbers emerged as victors by converting all four of their penalty kicks they faced. Coventry’s players missed their final two attempts to seal the victory for Portland.

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Ben Hollingsworth scored twice as the Charleston Battery came from behind to beat the Portland Timbers 3-1 in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Blackbaud Stadium. The Timbers jumped out to an early lead when Mamba Chisoni brought the ball down the left flank in the fifth minute. Chisoni crossed the ball to his opposite foot and brought the ball up towards the penalty area before crossing it to the far post where Luke Kreamalmeyer was waiting to blast the volley into the back of the net and put the Timbers up 1-0.

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Stephen Armstrong scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute and Omar Daley tallied two assists as the Charleston Battery overcame the Portland Timbers 3-2 at Blackbaud Stadium. Midfielder Luke Kreamalmeyer scored twice for Portland, his second and third goals in the two consecutive matches against the Battery.

Timbers midfielder Luke Kreamalmeyer scored on a penalty kick in the 17th minute. Mike Randolph was taken down inside the penalty box and the official immediately pointed to the spot. Kreamalmeyer sent a shot on the ground to the left side of the goal that Sounders goalkeeper Chris Eylander couldn’t stop. Cam Weaver and Maykel Galindo also netted for Seattle.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Felix Brillant scored a goal and collected an assist to lead the Virginia Beach Mariners over the Portland Timbers 3-1 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. Luke Kreamalmeyer continued his strong play, sending a shot past Nelson in the 39th minute. Newly acquired forward Yuri Morales helped set up the shot for Kreamalmeyer to put the Timbers ahead early, 1-0.

TORONTO - Josh Saunders made a key save in stoppage time and the Portland Timbers played the Toronto Lynx to a 0-0 draw at Centennial Stadium. Late in the game, a ball was played out to a Toronto player who had a clean left-footed shot at the goal, but Saunders was able to make the stop to seal the tie. Saunders faced 17 shots from Toronto, including five from forward Matthew Palleschi.

The ball deflected off of several players in front of the Timbers goal before Matt Schmidt was able to tap the ball past Timbers keeper Josh Saunders to put Minnesota up 1-0.

Kreamalmeyer vaulted the Timbers to a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute when he won possession at the top of the penalty area from two Virginia Beach defenders. Kreamalmeyer wasted no time in blasting a shot that sailed past Mariners goalkeeper Matt Nelson before deflecting off the near post and into the back of the net.

Both teams battled to a scoreless draw through 88 minutes before Di Lorenzo broke the game open. Di Lorenzo’s header on a cross from David Fronimadis found its way between the post and Timbers goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin to give the Impact the late victory.

Just four minutes into the match, the Battery forwards teamed up for the game’s only goal. Jordan Hughes sent a cross from the right side toward a streaking Armstrong. Armstrong collected the pass in stride and sent a blazing shot past Timbers goalkeeper Martin Hutton to give the Battery the early win.

Mike Chabala had a chance to tie it up in the 49th minute, as he came in-stride with a cross from Chisoni on the far side. Chabala redirected the ball toward the Silverbacks goal, but Quintero made a diving save to protect the lead.
