PORTLAND, Ore. - The Timbers opened 2005 with a bang after an own goal opened the floodgates for Edwin Miranda and Byron Alvarez to find the back of the net. Brian Winters was denied his first goal for Portland after officials ruled that his shot deflected off of Toronto’s Niels Dekker for an own goal in the 50th minute.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers played the Minnesota Thunder to a 2-2 tie on goals from Scott Benedetti and Scot Thompson. The Thunder took the early lead on an 11th minute goal by Melvin Tarley, but two quick strikes from Benedetti and Thompson gave the Timbers the lead. Johnny Menyongar evened the scoreline in the 79th minute.

SEATTLE - The Timbers reeled off two second-half goals and Josh Saunders collected eight saves to defeat the Sounders 2-1 at Qwest Field. Byron Alvarez and Tom Poltl found the net for the Timbers, with Welton Melo pulling a goal back for Seattle.

MINNEAPOLIS - Powered by a late goal from Dan Antoniuk and seven saves by Josh Saunders, the Timbers played the Thunder to a 1-1 draw at the Metrodome. Johnny Menyongar put the Thunder ahead in the 9th minute before Antoniuk’s header in the 78th tied the game.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Fadi Afash scored a late goal to lift the Timbers to a 1-0 victory over the Charleston Battery. With the match headed for a 0-0 draw, Portland pressed forward and Edwin Miranda cracked a shot off goalkeeper Chris Doyle. Byron Alvarez took a reflex shot that was also deflected but the ball fell into the path of Afash, who sliced the ball into the right side of the net in the 89th minute.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Timbers kept their 16-game unbeaten streak alive on goals from Byron Alvarez and Aaran Lines, tying the Virginia Beach Mariners 2-2 at PGE Park. Seemingly headed for a victory, the Timbers were dealt a late blow when a foul was called inside the penalty area, with a penalty kick awarded to the Mariners. The Mariners’ Darren Caskey converted the spot kick in the 84th minute to secure a draw for the two teams.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Rochester Raging Rhinos tallied three first-half goals and handed the Porland Timbers their first defeat of the season with a 3-1 victory at Frontier Field. Dan Antoniuk collected the lone goal of the evening for the Timbers, dialing in a penalty kick in the 82nd after being taken down from behind by Rhinos keeper Scott Vallow. Kirk Wilson scored twice and added an assist to lead Rochester.

TORONTO - An early goal from Dan Antoniuk was enough to power the Portland Timbers to a 1-0 win over the Toronto Lynx. Portland got its lone goal in the 14th minute when Antoniuk converted his second penalty kick in as many nights, making good on the opportunity after Scott Benedetti was brought down inside the box.

BAYAMON, P.R. - Mauricio Salles scored two goals and the Portland Timbers dropped their second game in three attempts, losing 2-0 to the Puerto Rico Islanders at Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel. Islanders goalkeeper Dan Kennedy, the Timbers’ second-round draft pick in the 2005 College Draft, handed the Timbers their first shutout of the season.

BURNABY, B.C. - The Timbers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Whitecaps on a last-minute goal by Steve Klein. With Vancouver leading 2-1 in stoppage time, Edwin Miranda sailed in an improbable goal from 30 yards out to tie the match at 2-2. But the Whitecaps got the win when Klein got a head on the ball in close and and bounced it past Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Dan Antoniuk scored two goals and the Portland Timbers overcame a halftime defecit to defeat the Puerto Rico Islanders 2-1 at PGE Park. Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar assisted on both goals in the second half. Despite outplaying the Islanders in the first half, the Timbers allowed Puerto Rico to tally the first strike when Corey Woolfolk converted a cross in the 44th minute. The Islanders were forced to play a man down for the last 11 minutes after Alexis Rivera was tossed for his second caution of the evening.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Five different players scored and the Rochester Raging Rhinos handed the Portland Timbers their worst loss in five seasons with a 5-0 win at PGE Park. Mauro Carabajal got the scoring started in the 15th minute and Rene Rivas capped the win with an unassisted goal in the 54th minute.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Defending-champion Montreal Impact shut out the Portland Timbers on a second-half goal by Sandro Grande. Montreal tallied the lone goal on a free kick in the 58th minute when Grande zeroed in on his target from 35 yards out and put it by Portland goalkeeper Josh Saunders.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Byron Alvarez scored his fourth goal of the season and the Timbers managed to work through a man-down situation to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Timbers took an early lead on Alvarez’s 7th minute strike and were forced to play a man short when Tom Poltl drew a red card in the 23rd minute for a cleats-up slide.

SEATTLE - Late goals from Byron Alvarez and Shaun Higgins weren’t enough to erase a three-goal defecit as the Seattle Sounders dealt the Timbers a 4-2 loss. Taylor Graham scored twice and Gabriel Sturm contributed a goal and an assist to help lead the Sounders.

VANCOUVER, B.C. - Steve Klein scored two goals and Joey Gjertsen added a goal and an assist as the Vancouver Whitecaps blanked the Portland Timbers 4-0. Portland goalkeeper Josh Saunders was tested all night, making two saves while facing 15 Vancouver shots. Three of Vancouver’s goals came within a five-minute span during the first half.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Timbers advanced to the fourth round of the 2005 U.S. Open Cup with a 2-0 shutout over the Seattle Sounders. Goals from Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar and Dan Antoniuk ensured the victory for Portland. Alcaraz-Cuellar converted a direct free kick from the edge of the 18-yard box in the 15th minute, with Antoniuk converting a penalty kick in the 59th minute to seal the victory.

PORTLAND, Ore. - A late goal from Steve Klein resulted in a 1-1 draw between the Portland Timbers and the Vancouver Whitecaps, despite a first-half goal by Scot Thompson. In the 31st minute, the Timbers tallied via a free kick from Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar that found the head of Thompson, and eventually the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Jason Jordan fed Klein in the 89th minute to knot the game at 1-1.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Jose Earthquakes advanced past the Portland Timbers in the U.S. Open Cup with goals from Wade Barrett and Brian Mullan at PGE Park. Goalkeeper Josh Saunders, a former Earthquake, faced 16 shots while making seven saves in the losing effort.The Timbers took 11 shots of their own in the contest, with Fadi Afash and Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar coming close to scoring for Portland.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Byron Alvarez opened the scoring for Portland, while Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar and Scot Thompson each collected a goal and an assist in the match, marking the first time since the season opener the Timbers tallied three goals in a game. Godfrey Tenoff, Melvin Tarley and James Alberts scored to preserve the tie for the Thunder.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Paul Conway hit for his first goal as a Timber in dramatic fashion, scoring the game-winner to propel the Portland Timbers to a 1-0 shutout victory over the rival Seattle Sounders. Conway, a second-half substitute, took advantage of the Seattle defense and finished off a Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar cross with a low drive in the box past Sounders keeper Preston Burpo in the 77th minute.

In the 86th minute, Higgins took a cross from Tom Poltl inside the box and finished it with an emphatic right foot to level the score.

In the 88th minute, substitute Gregory Simmonds sent a ball into the box that skipped to the back post for Lubezky, who sent home the decisive goal for the Battery.

Antoniuk added a second on a penalty kick in the 52nd, giving the Timbers a lead they never relinquished.

RICHMOND, Va. - Dan Antoniuk finished off a cross from Scott Benedetti for a Timbers lead, but the Richmond Kickers answered back with a goal from Jeff Hare to force a 1-1 draw. Antoniuk put the cap on a flurry of chances inside the Richmond box with a heading finish on a cross from Benedetti in the 59th. Gavin Wilkinson drew a red card two minutes after Antoniuk’s goal, leaving Portland short-handed as they failed to maintain the lead.

Josh Saunders collected four saves from 14 shots to get the shutout for Portland.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Roger Levesque tallied early and the Seattle Sounders hung on to defeat the Portland Timbers 1-0, taking a one-goal lead into the second and final leg of the two-game aggregate-goal series. Just two minutes into the match, Seattle hit for the game’s only goal on a throw-in by Zach Scott to an unmarked Levesque, who headed it in for the goal. Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders failed to deflect the well-placed header as the ball snuck inside the far post. Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar and Byron Alvarez went close, but the Timbers were unable to convert any chances in the contest.

SEATTLE - The Timbers’ 2005 season came to a close, as two goals from Roger Levesque sent the Seattle Sounders to a 3-0 win in the two-game, aggregate-goal series between the longtime rivals. For the second straight match, Levesque struck for a goal in the first five minutes of play, this time putting a head on a free kick from Leighton O’Brien after Maykel Galindo drew a foul outside the box to set up the goal. Levesque’s second tally, his third of the series, came when former Timber Andrew Gregor slid a low cross to an on-running Levesque, who dialed in the point-blank shot in the 54th minute to seal the victory for the Sounders.
