PORTLAND, Ore. - The Timbers opened their third A-League season with a home match against rival Seattle at PGE Park. Kyle Smith knocked in the only goal of the contest in the 35th minute to give Seattle the 1-0 edge in the first half. Neither team could find the net in the second, as the Sounders held on for the 1-0 win.

Sounders 2, Timbers 0 (U.S. Open Cup)
SEATTLE - The Timbers and Sounders met for the second time in as many days, and the result was no different for the Timbers, as Seattle won the match, 2-0. Kyle Smith put the Sounders on top in the 78th minute of play by nailing a 10-yard shot past Timbers ‘keeper Curtis Spiteri. Sean Michael Callahan put the Sounders up two goals in the 80th minute. With the loss, the Timbers failed to qualify for the U.S. Open Cup.

BURNABY, B.C. - The Timbers fell to 0-3 on the year with a 2-1 loss to the Whitecaps at Swangard Stadium. Vancouver’s Jason Jordan scored first, in the 11th minute. Fadi Afash countered in the 54th, only to be outdone by Dave Morris, who notched the game-winner on a ball from Jordan in the 65th minute. The loss kept the Timbers winless at Swangard in two-plus seasons of play. Vancouver outshot Portland, 13-5.

CALGARY, Alb. - The Timbers notched their first win of the 2003 season, defeating the Calgary Storm 1-0 at Foothills Park. Fadi Afash scored in the 43rd minute on a nice pass from McKinley Tennyson, allowing Portland to play defense for the rest of the match and hold off Calgary for its first road win of the year.

PORTLAND, Ore. - McKinley Tennyson and Fadi Afash scored three first-half goals, propelling the Timbers to their first home victory of the season with a 4-1 win over divisional-rival Calgary. Afash struck first 32 seconds into the game to give the Timbers a 1-0 advantage. Tennyson added two more scores in the first half and Jason Melendez tapped in an insurance goal in the 80th minute. The win marked the second victory for the Timbers in three days over the Storm, who scored in the 36th minute on a shot by Mark Korthuis.

SEATTLE - The Sounders’ Marco Velez scored the only goal of the match in the 15th minute, giving the Seattle side all the offense it needed to fend off the visiting Timbers at Seahawks Stadium. The Timbers fell to 0-3-0 vs. their Northwest rival in the 2003 campaign, having been shut out by Seattle in all three matches.

CALGARY, Alb. - McKinley Tennyson scored from 10 yards out in the opening minute of the match, but Calgary rallied for the 2-1 win on first half goals by Conrad Chala and Mark Korthuis. It was the Timbers’ first-ever loss to Calgary.

PORTLAND, Ore. - After weathering an early Portland flurry by remaining patient, the Thunder took command of the match, recording two first-half goals within a nine-minute span. Marco Ferruzzi, Johnny Torres and Johnny Menyongar all scored to hand Minnesota a 3-0 shutout win. The Thunder finished the match with a 15-3 shot advantage on the night, as the Timbers dropped their third straight.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Byron Alvarez headed in a ball from Fadi Afash in the 74th minute, giving the Timbers just enough cushion to hand Vancouver its first loss of the season. The 1-0 victory came on the heels of a power outage 15 minutes into the game. Power was eventually restored to the stadium in the second half and play continued on uninterrupted.

EL PASO, Texas - The Timbers overcame a 0-1 second-half deficit, scoring three unanswered goals to snap the El Paso Patriots’ four-game winning streak by the score of 3-1. McKinley Tennyson converted a penalty kick in the 67th minute after he was fouled inside the box, tying the match at one goal apiece. In the 70th minute, Jake Sagare passed the ball through two defenders to Byron Alvarez, who knocked in the go-ahead goal with his back to the net. Dan Antoniuk headed in the Timbers’ final goal for good measure in the 88th minute on a perfect cross by Fadi Afash to the far post. El Paso’s Enrique Cervantes scored the Patriots’ only goal of the match in the fourth minute.

MILWAUKEE - The Timbers got themselves into an early hole that they were unable to climb out of, losing 4-0 to the Milwaukee Wave United in a wet and muddy contest in Milwaukee. The start of the match was delayed 30 minutes and moved to a nearby practice field due to un-playable field conditions at Uihlein Soccer Park. It was the fifth shutout suffered by the Timbers in 2003.

PORTLAND, Ore. - McKinley Tennyson punched in the match-breaking goal in the first overtime period to give the Portland Timbers a 2-1 win and their second straight victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps. The game-winner came in the 95th minute when Dan Antoniuk passed the ball up the middle to Tennyson, who got by the defender and knocked it in from 10 yards out. Earlier, Byron Alvarez broke free and tapped in a floater over the goalkeeper’s head, putting the Timbers on the board 1-0 in the ninth minute. Oliver Heald scored for Vancouver.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Byron Alvarez knocked in the game-winner in the 92nd minute, handing the shorthanded Timbers a 1-0 victory before 5,419 fans at PGE Park. With only 10 Timbers on the field in the 92nd minute of play, Alvarez took a shot from just right of the box that bounced back to him off the Calgary goalkeeper. Alvarez then punched it back over the ‘keeper’s head to the left side of the net, handing the Timbers their second-straight win. The “golden goal” was Alvarez’s third game-winning goal of the season and fourth goal overall.

CALGARY, Alb. - After a scoreless first half, McKinley Tennyson wasted little time in putting the Timbers on top in the opening minutes of the second and Fadi Afash added a goal in the 85th minute, giving Portland a 2-0 win over the Calgary Storm at Foothills Park. The go-ahead score in the 46th minute came on a Scott Benedetti corner kick to Tennyson, who took the low-flying kick and dialed it in from point-blank. Afash took a second-half penalty kick and placed it into the left side of the net, denying the Calgary goalkeeper any chance at a save. Goalkeeper Josh Saunders logged his second shutout in as many games after being loaned to the Timbers for the rest of the season from San Jose.

BURNABY, B.C. - The Vancouver Whitecaps defeated Portland 1-0, scoring in second-half stoppage time on Canada Day to earn their seventh-straight home win over the Timbers. Vancouver registered the lone score of the evening after Tiarnan King made a run on the right side of the box and gave it off to Paul Dailly, who knocked the ball in from 15 yards out into the right side of the net, sealing the victory for the home team.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Byron Alvarez scored a hat trick in the span of 20 minutes, helping the Timbers regain sole possession of second place in the Pacific Division with a 3-0 victory over Vancouver. Alvarez’ first goal came in the 72nd minute as he beat out his defender and knocked in the score from inside 10 yards. The second goal, in the 81st minute, was the result of a mistake by Vancouver goalkeeper Michael Franks, who came out of the box and fell down, allowing Alvarez a clear path to the unchallenged goal. The third and final goal in the hat trick came in the 92nd minute after a corner kick by Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar bounced off a Vancouver defender and set up the easy score from point-blank.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar, Lee Morrison and McKinley Tennyson combined to score three goals for the Timbers, putting Portland above .500 for the first time all season. Tennyson dialed in the game-winner in the 78th minute after a shot by Aaron Heinzen deflected off Tennyson’s knee and into the net. Alcaraz-Cuellar put Portland on the board in the 21st minute, his first goal in two seasons with the Timbers. Morrison gave Portland a 2-1 lead at the half on his first goal of the season, lobbing it in over the ‘keeper’s head in the 45th.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Byron Alvarez and McKinley Tennyson each scored their eighth and ninth goals of the season, as the Portland Timbers overpowered the Milwaukee Wave United, winning 4-3 before 3,901 at PGE Park. The game-breaker came in the 90th minute of play, as Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar served the ball to Alvarez for the point-blank goal, giving the Timbers their sixth-straight win at PGE Park and third straight overall. The score marked Alvarez’ fifth game-winning goal of the season.

WILDER, Ky. - Jake Sagare scored the game-winning “golden goal” in overtime as the Timbers defeated the Cincinnati Riverhawks, 2-1. Sagare powered the match-breaker into the far side of the net in the 10th minute of overtime from 18 yards out. Facing a 1-0 second-half deficit, McKinley Tennyson evened the contest in the 80th minute, ringing in his 10th goal of the year. The score came after Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar took a corner kick and crossed it to Tennyson for the point-blank header. Allen Eller gave the Riverhawks the lead in the first half.

BLAINE, Minn. - The Minnesota Thunder snapped a four-game Portland winning streak, defeating the Timbers 1-0 in overtime at National Sports Center. Amos Magee, a late substitution for Minnesota, slammed the door shut on the Timbers in the 92nd minute, turning on a ball from 20 yards out and putting it into the corner of the net.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Timbers played last-place Calgary to a 1-1 tie, their first draw of the season. Calgary jumped on the board first in the eighth minute of play, as Nick Reyes beat out the defense and looped a shot over the head of Portland goalkeeper Josh Saunders from 35 yards out. Gavin Wilkinson knotted the score at one goal apiece in the 33rd minute, deflecting a corner kick by Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar into the net from six yards.

PORTLAND, Ore. - For the third time in 2003, Kyle Smith proved to be the difference for the Seattle Sounders in their race with divisional-rival Portland, as the Sounders took a 1-0 victory from the Timbers in front of 6,831 fans at PGE Park. Smith, who scored the game-winners in the Sounders’ first two meetings with the Timbers, scored the lone goal in the 28th minute, taking a feed from Scott Jenkins eight yards out from the net, hitting the left corner for the win.

SEATTLE - With their backs against the wall, the Timbers came through against their archrival at Seahawks Stadium. Byron Alvarez took a feed from Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar in the 69th minute and put home the game-winner as the Timbers defeated the Seattle Sounders for the first time in 2003, 3-1. The Timbers added to their lead in the 81st minute when Sounders’ goalkeeper Rich Cullen was beaten by a deflection off one of his own players. Portland, which hadn’t scored a goal in four previous meetings with the Sounders, took the early lead in the seventh minute when Jake Sagare drove down the near side and set up McKinley Tennyson, who poked it past Cullen from 12 yards out. Marco Velez scored the lone Seattle goal.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Timbers waited until the last minute to put away the team with the league’s worst record, shutting down the Indiana Blast, 1-0. Gavin Wilkinson dialed in the game-winner in the 90th minute of play after Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar executed a near-perfect cross off a free kick, setting up Wilkinson for the point-blank score.

BURNABY, B.C. - The Timbers and Whitecaps played to a 1-1 draw at Swangard Stadium, keeping the Timbers’ playoff hopes alive in the race for the Pacific Division. Fadi Afash led the Portland attack in the 47th minute, leaving a ball for Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar, whose shot deflected off Vancouver goalkeeper Michael Franks, opening the door for Jake Sagare to punch it in for the 1-0 lead. Alfredo Valente, a second-half substitution, deadlocked the match in the 61st minute, sending a ball from Carlo Corazzin over the head of goalkeeper Josh Saunders.

PORTLAND, Ore. - In a must-win situation, Portland out-fought the Sounders in a physical match between two longtime rivals to get the 1-0 win. In the 55th minute, Jake Sagare made a run past several Seattle defenders into the box and ripped a shot into the left side, giving the home team all they needed for the victory. The goal was Sagare’s second in as many nights and third on the year.

EL PASO, Texas - The Timbers ran into a road block on their path to the playoffs, as the El Paso Patriots defeated the visiting Timbers, 3-1. Despite posting their most wins in a season, the Timbers failed to make the postseason for the first time in three years. Portland scored on an unassisted goal by Byron Alvarez in the 73rd to narrow the gap, but it was not enough to overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit. Lourence Andrade scored two goals for the Patriots.

PORTLAND, Ore. - On a night honoring the late Clive Charles, the Timbers came up with a tribute of their own, shutting out the El Paso Patriots 3-0 at PGE Park. A record 13,351 fans turned out to see the team honor the legendary Timbers defender and University of Portland coach in the final game of the regular season. Charles’ No. 3 was retired in a halftime ceremony that featured friends, teammates and colleagues of the Timbers great, who played for Portland from 1978-81. Meanwhile, El Paso, which eliminated the Timbers from playoff contention the week prior, ran into an energized Portland team. Bryn Ritchie put the Timbers on top in the 18th minute, heading in a corner kick by Scott Benedetti. Benedetti then dialed in his first goal of the year in the 58th, blasting in a cross from Jason Melendez to give the Timbers a 2-0 advantage. Jake Sagare added on a goal for good measure, sneaking a baseline shot past the ‘keeper in the 84th minute.
