Timbers 2, Galaxy 1 (MLS Exhibition)
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Timbers had to get an early jump on the 2002 season, as Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy came to town just a week into training camp. The teams played evenly throughout the first half, but it was the Timbers that broke through first, with Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar playing a give-and-go with McKinley Tennyson, who chipped a shot just inside the left post for the 1-0 lead. In the 72nd minute, the Timbers doubled their lead when Gavin Wilkinson headed in a Ben Somoza corner kick. The Galaxy pulled closer on a Brian Mullen goal, but it wasn’t enough, as the Timbers would win an MLS exhibition for the second year in a row, again by a 2-1 score. For the second straight year, the Timbers’ MLS exhibition opponents would go on to win the MLS Cup, as the Galaxy did in 2002.

A crowd of 8,775 was on hand for the I-5 battle, but in just the 11th minute, the Sounders jumped to a 1-0 lead when Zach Kingsley deflected in a Jason Ferrell shot for the early advantage. The Timbers let some good scoring chances slip by, but were unable to find the net. In the 38th minute, former Timber Darren Sawatzky stretched the lead to two goals when he received a pass off a give-and-go with Brian Ching.
