Timbers sign defender on loan from San Jose

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland signed rookie defender Kevin Goldthwaite on loan for the remainder of the season from Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes with just two days remaining until the Timbers host the MLS club in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup at PGE Park.

“Adding a player of Kevin Goldthwaite's caliber for the stretch run to the playoffs was essential,” Timbers general manager Jim Taylor said. “Not only will this help us solidify our back line, but will allow us greater versatility in terms of the combinations and formations we use on the pitch."

Goldthwaite, 22, was selected by San Jose in the second round (17th overall) of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft out of Notre Dame. The Irish allowed goals to just three opponents when he was in the lineup his senior season.

A developmental player with San Jose, Goldthwaite started in seven matches for the Earthquakes’ reserve squad, collecting two goals and an assist during that span.

The Sacramento, Calif. native has yet to see minutes on San Jose’s first team in his first MLS season.

With the Timbers, he will wear the No. 2.

The Timbers and Earthquakes link up for a fourth-round U.S. Open Cup match at PGE Park this Wednesday, Aug. 3. Kickoff is 7 p.m. and tickets are available at area Ticketmaster outlets and in person at the PGE Park box office.

Those interested in group discounts are encouraged to contact the Timbers ticket office at (503) 553-5407.
