A
Alcaraz-Cuellar, Hugo. With a five-year career in Portland from 2002-2006, Alcaraz-Cuellar became the Timbers all-time USL First Division leader in assists (44), games (132) and minutes (11,386). Alcaraz-Cuellar also ranks second all-time in shots (145), third in points (64) and eighth in goals (10).
Alvarez, Byron. During his four-year stay in Portland (2003-06), Alvarez became the all-time leading scorer for the Timbers with 41 goals. With 9 assists to his credit, Byron is also the all-time points leader with 91.
Atlanta Silverbacks. A member of the USL First Division since 1999, the Atlanta Silverbacks also feature a team in the women's W-League, as well as amateur PDL and Super Y-League teams. Atlanta moved into its new home, Re/Max Greater Atlanta Stadium, during the 2006 season.
B
Benedetti, Scott. Midfielder who was a member of the Timbers squad when the franchise was resurrected in 2001. The stats from his five seasons in Portland put him 10th all-time in points scored (18), 10th in goals scored (6), tied for 5th in games played (96) and 6th minutes played (7,092).
C
California Victory. The California Victory joined the USL First Division in 2007. Based in San Francisco, the Victory have a direct tie to the Spanish League team Deportivo Alaves, and are owned by Alaves' President Dimitry Piterman.
Carolina RailHawks. The Carolina RailHawks entered the USL First Division in the spring of 2007. The RailHawks play their home matches at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, NC, the former training home of the U.S. men's national team.
Charleston Battery. The Charleston Battery have been USL First Division members since 1997, winning the league championship in 2003. The Battery play their home games at Blackbaud Stadium (capacity: 5,113), which was voted "Best Soccer Stadium" in 2002 by the U.S. Soccer Federation.
Coventry City FC. A British team that faced off against the Timbers in a 2006 exhibition at PGE Park. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation, courtesy of a penalty-kick goal by Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar, then the Timbers won the match on penalty kicks in front of 10,985.

Defense. One of the strong points of the Portland Timbers for several years. In 2004, the team led the league with the fewest goals allowed all season.
E
Elfvin, Bayard. Goalkeeper for the Timbers during the 2004 and 2006 seasons. Elfvin currently holds the Timbers’ USL record for lowest goals-against average, posting a 0.87 average over 10 games played.
F
Foul. A rules infraction that occurs during a game. Forward Byron Alvarez ranks highest all-time in fouls committed with 206 during his four seasons (2003-2006) in Portland. Alvarez also holds the single-season crown for committing 73 fouls during the 2004 campaign.
G
Goal. The object of ire for goalkeepers and desire for strikers, goals decide who wins. Fadi Afash and McKinley Tennyson have scored the most in a single season, with each of them scoring 18 in 2002. Byron Alvarez has netted the most for the Timbers, scoring 41 times from 2003-2006. Goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin holds both the single-season and career leads in goals-against average, with his .89 average in 2006 contributing to his overall average of 0.87.
Gordon, Alan. Nicknamed “Flash,” he was named A-League Rookie of the Year in 2004, when he led the league in scoring with 17 goals in 27 games for the Timbers. A graduate of Oregon State and known for his trademark red shoes, he joined the L.A. Galaxy of the MLS after the 2004 season.

Hand Ball. A ball touched illegally by a field player’s hand or arm. Goalkeepers are allowed to use their hands and arms if inside their own 18-yard box.
I
Iniguez, Sergio. A member of the Timbers’ 2006 squad, Iniguez played 227 minutes over nine matches for Portland.

K
Kei. Nickname of popular former Timbers striker McKinley Tennyson. A member of the Timbers in 2002 and 2003, Tennyson netted 29 goals, nine assists for 67 points in his two seasons in Portland.
Kickoff. A ball placed in the center spot at midfield and kicked forward by an attacking player, used to start the game at the beginning of each half and after a goal has been scored.
L
Lord of the Rings. Popular science-fiction trilogy written by British author J.R.R. Tolkien and recently made into movies by coach Gavin Wilkinson’s countryman, director Peter Jackson. Immensely popular worldwide, these books are the favorite of Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders.

Miami FC. Miami FC became the league's newest member when it joined the First Division prior to the 2006 season, filling the void left by the Richmond Kickers. With a roster that included international superstars Romario and Zinho, Miami advanced to the USL First Division playoffs in its first season in the league.
Minnesota Thunder. The Minnesota Thunder expanded their franchise to include a women's team, the Minnesota Lightning, in 2006. The Thunder joined the league in 1997 and won the league just two years later after a 22-6 season in 1999.
Montreal Impact. Since joining the league in 1993, the Montreal Impact have advanced to the postseason playoffs in 10 of their 14 seasons, managing to win the league in 1994 and 2004. The Impact are also one of the best-drawing teams in the league, with an average of 11,555 fans attending Montreal matches in 2006.
N
N.A.S.L. Founded in 1968, the North American Soccer League was the original league for the Portland Timbers. The team first played in the NASL in 1975 and played its final season in 1982. During the height of its run, the NASL featured names such as Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and George Best among its rosters, but spiraling costs doomed the league, and it ended play in 1985.
NeXturf. Installed when PGE Park was renovated in 2001, NeXturf is the next generation in artificial turf technology. O
Offside. One of the most difficult rules to understand in soccer. Position of an attacking player if he is between his opponent’s goal line and the ball when the ball is played unless he is on his own half of the field or two opponents are no farther from the goal line than the attacking player. A player cannot be offside if he receives the ball directly from a corner kick, goal kick, throw-in, or drop ball situation.
P
Pele. Played in Portland against the NASL Timbers for the New York Cosmos in the 1970’s. Pele’s final appearance in the NASL was in Portland when his New York Cosmos faced Seattle in the 1977 Soccer Bowl.
PGE Park. Home of the Portland Timbers since the franchise returned for the 2001 season. The stadium itself was built in 1926 and underwent a $38.5-million renovation in 2001 before the Timbers and the Triple-A Baseball Portland Beavers began play here.
Portland. Home city and namesake of the Portland Timbers. A city with a population of around 500,000, Portland is known as the Rose City because of the beautiful flowers that grow there all year. Portland is also conveniently located on both the Willamette and Columbia rivers, and was named on the flip of a coin after Portland, Maine in the 1840s.
Puerto Rico Islanders. The Puerto Rico Islanders joined the USL First Division in 2004 and reached the playoffs for the first time in the club's history in 2006. The Islanders fell, however, to the Charleston Battery in the first round.
Portland Timbers Official Supporters Club. The PTOSC is an organized group of faithful soccer fans located in section 122. Qwest Field. Home of the Timbers arch rivals, the Seattle Sounders. Built in 2002, the Sounders played the first event in the stadium infront of a USL First Division record crowd of over 25,000 people. Qwest Field is also the home of the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL.
R
Red Card. This is exactly as it sounds, a red card that the referee pulls from his pocket. This card is only used when extreme or dangerous fouls have been committed, or if a player has just received his or her second yellow card. The red card means that the player must leave the field immediately and cannot be replaced. The carded player’s team then must play the rest of the match with one less person on the field.
Rochester Raging Rhinos. Magnificent PAETEC Park became the new home of the Rochester Raging Rhinos in June, 2006, a soccer-specific stadium that seats 13,700. The Raging Rhinos also hold the distinction of having reached the playoffs every year since joining the league in 1996, a streak of 11 seasons.

Saunders, Josh. During his career with the Timbers from 2003-2006, Saunders became the team’s USL First Division leader in wins (41), saves (334) and shutouts (22) and ranks second in goals-against average (1.17).
Seattle Sounders. The closest geographical neighbors to the Timbers, the Seattle Sounders and the Timbers share a strong local rivalry. The Sounders also compete, along with the Timbers and the Vancouver Whitecaps, for the Cascadia Cup, which is given to the team with the best head-to-head record among the three clubs each season. Seattle won the 2006 Cascadia Cup, breaking a two-year hold by the Whitecaps.
Soccer. The beautiful game, the sport we all know and love.
Sunderland AFC. Came to PGE Park during the 2005 season for an exhibition match that ended in a 0-0 draw. Known as the Black Cats, Sunderland played the 2005-2006 season in England’s FA Premiership and offered a trial to the Timbers’ Scot Thompson.

Thompson, Scot. The former UCLA defender was a finalist for the USL First Division Defender of the Year award in 2005. Thompson also has connections to England through his British-born parents, his 2006 trial with Coventry City FC and his 2005 trial with Sunderland AFC, formerly of the FA Premiership.
Timber Jim. A team icon since back in the days of the NASL Timbers, Timber Jim has been the face of the Timbers for generations. During games, he can be seen hanging from the rafters of PGE Park, sawing pieces off of a log after goals, and climbing the pole located in the stadium. Timber Jim also performs stunts and leads songs and cheers during home games.
Timbers Army. The independent supporters club of the Portland Timbers. These fans typically sit in section 107 at PGE Park and can be recognized by their scarves and their trademark singing and cheering during home games. To join the Timbers Army, simply purchase a general admission ticket at any home game and go join them in section 107.
U
USL First Division. Formerly the A-League, this league has been the home of the Portland Timbers since it-started play in 2001. The United Soccer Leagues includes the First and Second Divisions, as well as the W-League for women, and the Super-Y and Premier Development League for amateur soccer players to develop their talent in soccer while maintaining their college eligibility. The Timbers finished 2004 as regular-season champions.
UCLA. University where Timbers defender Scot Thompson majored in Sociology. While playing for the Bruins, Thompson earned First Team All-Pac-10 and Second Team NSCAA All-Far West accolades and helped UCLA to reach the semifinals of the NCAA tournament in 1999.

Van Nuys, California. Hometown of former Timbers midfielder Edwin Miranda, who played in Portland from 2004-2006. While playing for the Timbers, Miranda scored five goals and was elected to the USL First Division Team of the Week five times.
Vancouver Whitecaps. A USL First Division rival of the Timbers since the Timbers began play again in 2001. The Whitecaps are owned by Greg Kerfoot and play their games in Swangard Stadium, although a new stadium has been announced. The city of Vancouver will be hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Virginia Beach Mariners. Formerly the Hampton Roads Mariners, the Virginia Beach Mariners have been mainstays in the USL First Division since 1998. The Mariners also annoucned the expansion of the organization to include a PDL team, the Virginia Beach Submariners, which began play in 2006.
W
Wilkinson, Gavin. The only player to have played every season for the Timbers from 2001-2006, Gavin assumed the team’s head coaching duties following the 2006 season.
Winters, Brian. A University of Portland graduate, Brian Winters is the Timbers’ all-time USL First Division leader in minutes played (11,138), games played (127) and fouls committed (195) during his Timbers career from 2001-2005.
Women's World Cup. PGE Park was home to several matches during the 2003 Women’s World Cup. During the group phase, Portland played host to Ghana vs. Australia and China vs. Russia. In the quarterfinals, Canada played China and Germany played the United States in the semifinals. The total attendance for the events came to 66,766, a new record for the stadium since its renovation in 2001.

Y
Yellow Card. This is exactly as it sounds, a yellow card that the referee pulls from his pocket to ‘caution’ a player who has broken a rule. If a player receives two yellow cards in one match, he or she is subsequently shown a red card and must leave the field right away. The player that has been sent off cannot be replaced and his or her team must play the rest of the game with one less player.
