Community Fund
The Portland Beavers and Portland Timbers community mission is to make the quality of life better for children and families in the greater-Portland area. We strive to reach this goal through focused giving each year, as well as dedication to strengthening the bond between the Portland Beavers, Portland Timbers and their fans through extensive community outreach. In addition to community appearances, the Beavers and Timbers donated more than $400,000 to local auctions, fundraisers, and community initiatives and an additional $100,000 through the newly established Portland Beavers & Portland Timbers Community Fund.
The Portland Beavers & Portland Timbers Community Fund (PBPTCF), an advised fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, was established in the summer of 2007 and officially launched in January 2008. The fund set an aggressive goal to distribute more than $100,000 in grants to deserving non-profits in the four-county region surrounding the Portland metro area each year. As professional sports organizations, the Beavers and Timbers are uniquely positioned to have a positive impact on their surrounding community and the creation of the PBPTCF is a key component in the effort to maximize our outreach initiatives.
The PBPTCF donated $30,000 to six nonprofits in the spring 2009 round of grants. Some of those that benefitted were Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), PGE Foundation’s Community 101 program, Girl Scouts of Oregon, and Special Olympics of Oregon. For the summer round of grants, $51,500 was distributed out to nine organizations, including: Beaverton Area Little League, Impact NW, The Julia Reimann Field Project, Lents Little League, The Library Foundation, America Scores Portland, Portland Youth Builders, LaCamas Little League, and Benson Tech. Beaverton Area Little League received $10,000, the largest grant of 2009.
Under the direction of the Portland Beavers & Portland Timbers Community Fund Advisory Board, which has representatives from Nike, Spirit Mountain and Ross Electric, the PBPTCF also distributed $23,000 in fall grants to six organizations, where the focus was mostly on education. Grantees included: Community Transitional School, Make a Wish Foundation of Oregon, The Pangaea Project, Lincoln HS Field Project, Hough Foundation, and Roosevelt HS Complex in St. Johns.
The PBPTCF is proud to be one of only 9% of funders in Oregon and southwest Washington giving more in 2009 than in 2008, per a study from Grantmakers of Oregon and Southwest Washington. The Portland Beavers & Portland Timbers Community Fund aims to continue to focus giving more each year back into the Portland youth community.
The Portland Beavers & Portland Timbers invite you to play an instrumental part in helping support the community through a unique community partnership. We are looking for philanthropic-minded individuals to share in our mission and feel strongly that the combined efforts of all Portland Beavers & Portland Timbers community partners will enable us to have a greater overall impact within the Portland metro and SW Washington communities, than if any one of us were to act alone. To learn how you can become a community partner email Sierra Smith at ssmith@pgepark.com.
