As part of our inaugural group of ticket holders, Lori and Sean won the chance to have a VIP experience for the Portland Timbers vs. FC Dallas match on June 15th, including KeyBank Club seats, and a chance to visit with Timber Joey on the field!
We asked Lori a few questions after the match:
What was your first memory of supporting the Timbers?
We saw the first Timbers game at the University of Portland field (before JELD-WEN was ready). During that match, we kept thinking how totally awesome the Timbers Army was, and we were struck by the speed and agility of number 11. Everybody around us started pulling out their roster sheets trying to figure out who 11 was, and we all tried to say his name resulting in various butchered pronunciations of Alhassan's name all around us. He still is amazing to watch, but seeing him for the first time and that close up was definitely something special. A close second for favorite memories was the Timbers' shut out of the LA Galaxy that year.
What was your favorite moment of this match?
The easy answer would be Nagbe's goal, but the most exciting moment was actually when the Timber's had two back-to-back shots on goal that were blocked. Even though it did not result in a goal, it was really fun to watch.
Who would you nominate as Player of the Match?
That is really difficult! Ricketts got another clean sheet and had some awesome saves. Nagbe, again, placed the ball in the net with perfect precision. Chara disrupted and charged like the champion and solid all-around player he is. Will Johnson never stopped in spite of constant muggings mid-field. Alhassan tirelessly advanced the ball and avoided defenders. So, man-of-the match is Porter. Somehow he manages to try new combinations that are the perfect match-ups against for each team the Timbers play. He is a genius.
What is your prediction for the next match – Timbers versus LA Galaxy?
The Timbers will control the ball (60% + possession) and wear down the Galaxy, resulting in a win for the Timbers. Goal differential of 2.
What else should we know about your Timbers fandom?
We are on the big picture of original season ticket holders out of sheer luck. We went to the downtown Timbers store on a rainy day before the first season started just because we wanted to buy Timbers jerseys. It turns out, they were doing the pictures with the axes and chainsaw and such for that original mural. It is my favorite family pic and probably always will be. Yeah, that was almost as lucky as being fans of the match. It was great to sit in the fancy seats and get fed a bunch. However, we will happily return to section 209 to stand, drink, cheer, and cuss through the whole match, like the true fans we are. RCTID!
There’s no doubt about your true fandom, Lori! Thank you for your wonderful support!

Continuing the new tradition of the presentation of roses following Thorns games to the goal scorers and goalkeeper who achieved a shutout, Girls, Inc. has been sending participants from their great youth programs to meet players after the game and hand them the roses in front of the North End supporters. For an organization that looks to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold, it's truly a special moment after the match.

What makes your strong, smart and bold?
I am strong because I am good with my friends and I am very confident. I like to help others achieve their goals. I am smart because I study a lot and I have motivation – well, sometimes I procrastinate, but everyone has their moments. And in general, I am good with people which can make you smart. I can be bold a lot. I like to challenge what others think if I don’t not think it is correct. And I will admit when I am not correct about what I am thinking but I definitely like to challenge common ideas.
Tell us about today:
I was at the season’s opening day match which was great. But today’s game was more high energy and a more goals were scored. It definitely had a different kind of energy.
Favorite part about today:
My favorite part about today was definitely the game. I really liked Alex’s goals – they were very pretty and superb. And the Rose Ceremony. I was so nervous! They are amazing soccer players – they are world class and I aspire to be like them. They are my role models.

In Portland we do things a little different: the people, the soccer, the beer, and now the fish and chips. This Saturday and Sunday, you can experience all it together at JELD-WEN Field.
The Portland Timbers Food Cart Alliance is proud to welcome Pirates Fish and Chips to JELD-WEN Field for the Portland Timbers vs. FC Dallas on Saturday (2pm PT, ESPN, 750 The Game / La Pantera 940), and Portland Thorns FC vs. Seattle Reign FC on Sunday (2pm PT, TICKETS, webstream, Freedom 970.
Based in Hood River, OR, Pirates Fish and Chips was opened in 2012 by restaurateurs Richard and Sherri Wilson. The couple owned and operated an Italian restaurant in Arizona, but the long hours and struggling economy led them to sell their business and relocate to Oregon.
After discovering the Portland food cart craze, but struggling to find fish and chips one night, Richard and Sherri decided it was time to do it themselves. Their fish and chips are made from fresh fish sourced from the coast that includes cod, halibut, albacore tuna, and rockfish, served with house made tartar sauce and a batter that never leaves your hands greasy.
Richard and Sherri say that serving at JELD-WEN Field this weekend is the greatest opportunity they’ve had thus far. They know it will be a lot of work, but they are looking forward to sharing their culinary creations with 20,000 fans.
As of right now, Pirates Fish and Chips only has one location in Hood River, Oregon, but Richard and Sherri say they are in the process of opening a second truck in Portland later this season. For now, however, fans can get a sneak peek at Pirates Fish and Chips this Saturday and Sunday at the Soccer City Grill above Section 93.
The menu for Saturday and Sunday will include:
2PC Fish & Chips Basket
2 pieces of fresh Pacific True Cod served with house made tarter sauce, fresh natural cut fries and pirates magic coleslaw
Grilled Salmon Burger & Fries
4oz of Fresh Grilled Salmon on a toasted bun served with fresh natural cut fries &
house made tarter sauce and topped with pirates magic coleslaw

Blessing Bee Makwera was the recipient of a Spread the Love welcome packet for the May 12th match against Chivas USA. He was nominated by Stephen Clawson, vice president of Operation of Hope, an organization that provides life-changing surgical care in under-served areas of the world.
“Home is not a roof above your head but the love that you get from those around you,” said Makwera. “When I received the Spread The Love packet I knew I didn't need Africa to feel at home because you guys loved me.”
Makwera grew up in Zimbabwe where, when he was 15-years-old, he discovered a landmine. Not knowing what it was, he began playing with it, causing it to detonate near his face. The explosion resulted in Makwera losing his jaw, teeth, and part of his tongue. He attempted to recover in a Zimbabwe hospital, but the resources he needed to complete a full recovery were lacking.
With the help of Operation of Hope, Makwera traveled to San Diego, California for the first of three surgeries. He is now living in Portland with Clawson, working as a teacher’s aide at a local private school.
Makwera says he loved his experience at the Timbers game.
“The whole game was awesome,” he said. “The Timbers Army supported the club all the way through [the game] and with that much support I don't think you could lose.”
Several people and organizations were involved in helping Makwera get to the United States for the operations he needs. He is very grateful for all of the support, especially from his “American family.” He says he knows what it means to “Spread the Love.”
“It means we are all family and the only force that can keep us together is love,” said Makwera. “By spreading love we are staying stronger as one family.”

The 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup continues tonight with the Portland Timbers taking on the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the fourth round (7:30pm PT; Tickets, webstream, 750 AM The Game / La Pantera 940).
Matches are going on across the country tonight with the Chicago Fire hosting the Columbus Crew and it is with the Fire that a Chicago piece of Open Cup legend was born with now Timbers assistant coach Amos Magee.
In a 2001 quarterfinal game against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, then Fire head coach Bob Bradley subbed Magee on late and he scored a 114th minute gamewinner using, well . . . his chest.
Hear him tell the story to Chicago-Fire.com:

We know how it goes. You've had your eye on a new Timbers kit but wonder what name and number to put on the back? Valeri and #8? Nagbe and #6? Johnson and . . . WAIT. Which Johnson? Both are great choices.
We've upped the ante on this dilemma a little bit by putting together a special offer that involves you buying a kit, us numbering it for you for FREE, and a chance to meet said player at a future Timbers training session. To enter is as easy as three steps:
Step 1 – Purchase any Timbers primary or secondary jersey (replica or authentic) between Tuesday, June 11 and Monday, June 24.
Step 2 – Receive free customization of your favorite player’s name and number.

There is a certain art to diplomacy--particularly when it comes to a classic soccer scarf.
In the case of Chicago-Fire.com editor Jeff Crandall--a diplomat well-versed in the in's and out's of supporters scarf culture--it should come as no surprise that when he happened upon a flight attendant who was a diehard Timbers Army supporter, that an exchange of scarves would happen--mid-flight, no less.

It has been demonstrated time and again that soccer has the power to make a positive impact in the community. The Portland Timbers firmly believe in that potential and constantly seek new opportunities to become involved through their community outreach platform Stand Together.
MLS WORKS is recognizing individuals from every MLS city, who have taken this idea to heart and promote goodwill, demonstrate leadership qualities and help to improve lives within their community.
Through June 20th, fans can nominate themselves or somebody in their community who sets an example as a leader in the community and uses soccer as a tool to help make a positive impact in one of the following areas:
- Social issues focusing on acceptance and equality
- Health issues affecting men, women or children
- Community service for a local, national or international charity or community organization
One community MVP will be selected for each team and will receive VIP tickets, recognition during a 2013 home game, team merchandise, and an autographed item.
One Grand Prize winner will receive a $10,000 donation to their charity of choice and a trip to the 2013 AT&T MLS All-Star Game, including airfare, accommodations, and tickets. The Nominator of the Grand Prize winner and one guest will also receive a trip to the 2013 AT&T MLS All-Star Game.
